ACLM Examination

All members who are working to achieve Membership (MACLM) or Fellowship (FACLM) must pass the College Examination. Examination is only offered to current Associate members who have completed all other requirements in working towards Member/Fellowship.

Exam Format

The College Examination is an open book examination. Candidates have 24 hours to complete the examination which is emailed to them at a pre-specified date and time.

Answers are expected to be researched, referenced and of a high standard. Answers must be the Candidate’s own work. Answers found to be plagiarised will receive zero (0) marks. This includes the use of artificial intelligence applications in part or all of the answer provided.

The Examination is divided into three (3) Parts: Part A, Part B and Part C.

Streams

There are two streams of examination - Legal or Forensic Stream. The exam which you will be offered will be the one most relevant to your qualifications and expertise. You do not sit both exams - only one is necessary to achieve Membership/Fellowship.

Scheduling

Beginning in 2025, ACLM will schedule two fixed examination blocks per year: one in February and the other in July. All examination candidates will be required to complete their exams during these blocks. Marking of the batch of completed exams will occur following the two block periods. To assist with the transition, we will maintain flexible scheduling of exams up until the 7th February 2025. All exams completed between now and the 7th February will be marked following the 7th February regardless of the date they are completed. For any candidates who do not sit the exam by the 7th February, the next opportunity to sit the exam will be the July 2025 exam block.

If you have completed all other requirements of Membership or Fellowship and would like to schedule your exam prior to 7th February 2025, contact ACLM to arrange your exam time.

Cost

There is currently no examination cost. You must be a current financial member of the College to sit the exam (all membership fees paid).

Preparation

Sample Questions for Part B and C are sent to the candidate in the lead up to them sitting the exam, to assist in preparing for the exam.

Pass requirement

To pass the examination, you must achieve a minimum of 60% overall, with a minimum of 50% for Part A, Part B, and Part C individually.

Number of attempts

If a candidate fails, ACLM will provide specific feedback on their results and work with them to determine why they didn't pass, whether this was due to lack of references, incorrect answers, or plagiarism, etc. The following would apply:

 - Candidates who fail are allowed to attempt the exam again after a period of 6 months has elapsed.

 - The candidate may repeat the exam up to 3 times.

 - If the candidate fails the exam on the third attempt, they will be asked to repeat all ACLM mandatory short courses again before another attempt is allowed.
