The Australasian College of Legal Medicine pays tribute to Dr John Moran who was a Fellow of our College since 2007. Dr Moran passed away on Saturday 13 June 2020. Many of our members came to know John and his wife Pamela as they regularly enjoyed attending our Annual Scientific Meetings and Awards Dinners. We will greatly miss his presence and we are grateful for the contribution he made towards legal medicine.

Dr Moran began his medical career at the Wangaratta and Albury Hospitals before moving to Wodonga, where he served as a General Practitioner for over 45 years. As one of the longest serving doctors in the area, he was highly esteemed in the medical community and by his patients, and he was a great mentor for younger doctors.

Dr Moran was involved with the Albury Wodonga Health and Wodonga Regional Health Service Boards for over 36 years and was heavily involved in fundraising and community liaison. Dr Moran was also a member of the 'original' cross border hospital planning committee, the Murray Valley hospital planning committee in 1974 and a member of the Deloites Review and Stephen Duckett Review which led to the formation of Albury Wodonga Health.

Dr Moran was a Medical Officer to the Victorian Police Custodial and Forensic Services, providing medical care to people in police custody. He was also Director of the Albury Wodonga Regional GP Network, and a medical director of Victoria Displan (Medical Disaster Plan).

Dr Moran’s passion for motor racing and medicine were combined as he served as Winton Motor Raceway’s Chief Medical Officer for over two decades. He transformed the medical response at Winton in the late 90’s by ensuring doctors were quickly on the scene at any trackside incidents, at a time when this was not common practice.

Dr Moran will be remembered forever as a gentleman and a family man, with a caring and kind manner, who used his professional skills to benefit others in his community. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Pamela, and his daughters Freya, Perdita and Demelza (Millie).
